Project Profile

Project Lake Eacham Day Use Area Location Lake Eacham, North QLD Client Environmental Protection Agency QLD Contract Value $0.5m Construction Period September 2007 to November 2007

Lake Eacham Day Use Area

Description

This project was situated within world heritage rainforest in the Crater Lakes National Park, Atherton Tablelands, Far North Queensland. CivilTeam was contracted to design and construct the road, bus and car park infrastructure for the Lake Eacham Day Use Area.

Works

  • Earthworks involving cut to fill
  • Roadworks—provision of a main feeder road to 3 car park areas and a bus bay
  • Installation of storm-water drainage, environmental controls and 2 interceptors
  • Environmental management
  • Quality management
  • Safety management

Challenges

  • Working within the requirements of a Wet Tropics Permit
  • Considerable environmental implications

Our Management

This project was completed within budget and 16 weeks ahead of contract practical completion date. This was partly due to a drier than normal wet season, and partly to CivilTeam’s programming and management.

Value Adding

An important consideration was to redesign works in such a way as to preserve World Heritage trees. CivilTeam achieved this goal above and beyond what was expected, preserving a particularly magnificent cedar that the original design had marked for felling, and taking the initiative to physically relocate a number of other trees that would also have been lost.

“I would once again like to thank your team for their worthy efforts and positive attitudes on this project and look forward to working with your team again should we be presented with any similar challenges in the future.”
Lee Hess, Senior Project Officer, Wet Tropics—Northern Region Environmental Protection Agency QLD QLD Parks and Wildlife Service
