Project Profile

Project Cairns International Airport – Domestic Apron Bay 23 Location Cairns, QLD Client Cairns Port Authority Contract Value $2.9m Construction Period August 2007 to January 2008 (Stage1)

Cairns International Airport

Description

This project delivered a successful pavement upgrade at the Domestic Apron Bay 23 for the Cairns Port Authority.

Despite being faced with several significant issues, the project was completed eight weeks ahead of schedule.

On this result, CivilTeam was awarded the remaining Domestic Apron Bays 18 to 23 contract, in Stages 2 to 8 of the airport redevelopment.

Works

Key elements in this project included:

  • Supply and placement of high strength concrete to within high-specification tolerances
  • Excavation of the existing domestic airport apron flexible pavement and preparation of subgrade
  • Prime seal to protect from rain
  • Supply and placement of 9300 m2 of 500mm thick 4.8 MPa flexural strength concrete
  • 5,000 m concrete saw cutting and jointed sealing of 40 mm dowelled joints
  • Excavation and backfilling of airport fuel line services trenching (JUHI)

Challenges

  • Working airside on Australia’s fifth largest airport
  • Concrete pour scheduling in a tropical climate with restricted apron access
  • Quality Control for high quality pavement
  • Daily concrete pour of up to 120 m3 per crew in periods of low aircraft movements
  • Co-ordination with other project contractors
  • Acid sulphate soil management
  • Strict environmental controls (the Barron River runs at one end of the works)

Our Management

CivilTeam rescheduled the layout of our concrete pours around the fuel line contractor’s works (a key element of the project). Initial non-conforming supply of structural concrete had to be resolved quickly to ensure that both quality and tight time frame specifications were met.

The management of these issues provided a cost-effective solution within the desired timeframe with minimal disruption to operations.

Value Adding

CivilTeam’s commitment to communications was crucial in the success of this project.
