Newell Highway Underpass, Tomingley, NSW
Description
This Design and Construction project of a Newell highway underpass consisted of a pre-stressed concrete beam deck on contiguous pile walls. The program also included construction of a diversion road prior to the commencement of works for the underpass. This project was on behalf of a gold mining company and all construction of the bridge works were required to conform to the standards and specifications that exist on the mine site, whilst also conforming to RMS technical standards.
Works
The contract involved:
- Construction of a diversion road tie in areas with the Newell Highway reopened at the end of each shift for overnight traffic
- Construction of a temporary diversion road to allow traffic on the Newell Highway to flow while the bridge was constructed
- Installation of contiguous piles to retain the earth behind and support the abutments on top
- Installation of precast and insitu concrete elements of the bridge
- Asphalting and sealing the bridge and tie in areas after the installation of the bridge
Challenges
- High traffic volumes and high truck density.
- Working in a mine environment, but also being within a road reserve on the Newell Highway.
Our Management
A road safety auditor was engaged by the client during the construction of the diversion road to assist in the safety management of the site at the end of each shift. The site team was commended on maintaining the smooth traffic diversions during the difficult transition period. The Newell Highway was reopened to normal traffic (at a reduced speed limit of 80km/hr) while the underpass was constructed.
Value Add
It was CivilTeam’s innovative methodology, accelerated programme and value for money that won this contract. This project was completed on schedule and on budget.
