Ballina North Breakwater Remedial Works
Description
The Dept of Primary Industries awarded CivilTeam the contract to undertake remedial works to repair the breakwater and ensure it could continue to function as designed and maintain public safety.
Work included the placement of 8, 12, and 16 Tonne hanbars and rock armour along three predetermined positions on the breakwater.
Works
The majority of hanbars were placed using the CivilTeam 65 Tonne Crawler Crane. A 150 Tonne hydraulic crane was also used in the placement of 16 Tonne hanbars outside the reach of the crawler crane. All rock amour was positioned by an excavator.
Challenges
- Safety - Proximity to a water barrier
- Quality - defective client supplied materials
- Programming - limiting the construction footprint to minimise land disturbance
- Environmental - Major Community Interest
Our Management
The location of the works required management of environmental conditions and associated safety risks due to minimal space on the breakwater.
CivilTeam procured a specialised Self-Release Hook which eliminated the need for personnel accessing the hanbars to detach the hook.
The use of the Self-Release Hook cannot be understated in the success of this project.
It was the project teams innovation and industry best practice methodology that delivered the project 4 weeks ahead of schedule.
Value Adding
The site compound was demobilised and rehabilitated to a higher standard than the original carpark condition. The Marine Rescue personnel appreciated the level of commitment to completing the works and improving the amenity of the public area.
Since completion, the remedial works project has been recognised within the industry for best practice and engineering excellence.
CivilTeam were 2013 Finalists - NSW Division, Civil Contractors Federation Earth Awards - Category 1.
