Upgrade Works to Two Aerodromes, NT & WA
Description
This project was part of the remote aerodrome upgrade program being undertaken by the Australian Government’s Regional Aviation Access Program. These isolated rural airfields are critical for supplies, communication and medical services for the indigenous communities they serve.
Works
Bickerton Island:
- The island runway strip was widened to 80m, and all gradients and transition slopes following earthworks were within CASA standards and provide appropriate drainage. This involved substantial clearing and negotiations with the traditional owners. Runway line-marking was also carried out.
Millajiddee:
- The airstrip required widening to 80m and associated works including the relocation of drainage.
Other works included the maintenance, realignment and replacement of runway cones, and vegetation removal from approaches.
Challenges
- Limited access to Bickerton Island – transport on a monthly barge only
- Remote location with difficult access
- Indigenous Relations
- Working on a live aerodrome - open to traffic at all times
Our Management
Due to the location of Bickerton Island all plant and equipment was required to be brought to site by a monthly barge.
It was very important to the client that these works be performed to a high standard, in a manner sensitive to the local communities, and with minimal impact and time.
