Wagga Wagga Airport

Description

In 2010, Wagga Wagga City Council released a 20-year Master Plan which included a new Commercial and Light Aircraft Precinct.

CivilTeam were awarded the contract to complete this project which included the construction of a aircraft strength runway, taxiway, apron and associated works.

Works

Precinct 2A incorporated the construction of the following infrastructure:

  • Construction of approx 45,000 m2 of aircraft strength runway, taxiway and apron
  • Earthworks, granular pavements and bituminous surfacing
  • Protection and relocation of existing engineering services and provision of new services, including infrastructure for electricity supply (HV ), communications, water and natural gas
  • Construction of approx 1200m kerb and channel, sealed road and new intersection
  • Construction of approx 400m sealed minor access road and car parking areas
  • Surface and piped stormwater drainage
  • Airside fencing, gates and signage

Challenges

  • Extreme weather led to demobilising/remobilising site to complete asphalting
  • Supply of asphalt quality and quantity to project specifications
  • Co-ordinating Specialist Subcontractors
  • Severe flooding in the region strained resource availability
  • Working within an operating airport

CivilTeam maintained communications with the client regarding issues with the asphalt quality and supply.

CivilTeam continually adjusted and adapted its approach to the task to ensure the client received a quality product.

Value Adding

The Australian Airports Association recently acknowledged this project by awarding the Wagga Wagga Regional Airport – Commercial and Recreational Precincts Development the 2013 joint winners for Regional Airport of the Year – 50,000 to 499,999 passengers.
