Wujal Wujal Infrastructure Upgrade
Description
This project was funded under the QLD ‘s State Indigenous Infrastructure Program, aimed at improving environmental health infrastructure in indigenous communities.
The Wujal Wujal community is located in a World Heritage Area, near Cooktown, 170km north of Cairns.
The works program included 2.1km rising main, water treatment plant upgrade, new road construction, generator works, and reservoir protection works.
Works
The contract was divided into six parts consisting of:
- Management of asbestos removal
- 2100m x DN150 water main, 590m x temporary water main and associated works
- Water treatment plant upgrade
- 585m of roadworks
- Diesel/electrical generator works
- Telemetry and instrument works upgrades
- Reservoir protection works
Challenges
- Working in a remote community—limited access for deliveries of goods and services.
- Removal of asbestos—specialist contractors were engaged to remove all asbestos.
- Rock outcrops continually slowing earthworks progress—sourcing machines to break the extremely hard rock outcrops, rather than blasting, was difficult
- Wet Season—affected concrete supply
- Indigenous Relations
Our Management
The client was particularly happy with the management team’s professional approach and excellent communications.
The 20% local indigenous labour requirement (IEP) was met, contributing an economic flow on benefit to the local community.
Value Adding
The project was completed on time, and in addition CivilTeam managed to achieve considerable savings for the client.
