Project Profile

Project Upgrade Works to Seven Aerodromes Location North and South Regions of Tennant Creek, Northern Territory Client Department of Infrastructure and Transport Contract Value $2.72m Construction Period July 2011 to November 2011

Tennant Creek Aerodrome Upgrades

Description

This contract was awarded on CivilTeam’s demonstrated capability and the strong partnership built with the client over the previous aerodrome projects (21 airfields).

This contract included a major rebuild at Bonya airfield, which had deteriorated so badly it had been closed for 18 months. In determining the scope of works, sensitive negotiations were required with local authorities and the Central Lands Council (based in Alice Springs), as an area of significant cultural heritage would be impacted.

Works

Key elements undertaken varied between sites, but included:

  • A major rebuild of Bonya airstrip
  • Pavement—ranging up to a complete rebuild
  • Dragging/rolling of runways and taxiways
  • Restoring and replacing runway markers, cones, gables, wind indicators and solar lighting
  • Stock-proof Fencing
  • Road and access track construction
  • Clearing, grubbing and de-vegetation
  • Lighting installation and commissioning

Challenges

  • Executing works on a live aerodrome
  • Remote locations with difficult access
  • Indigenous Relations – acquisition of relevant permits for Bonya Airstrip

Our Management

The major rebuild at Bonya airstrip involved excavation on land with significant cultural heritage. A site crew negotiated the scope of works and relevant permits in advance with local stakeholders.

CivilTeam coordinated the project to move north to south ahead of the wet season.

An advanced crew managed indigenous relations, on-site arrangements and local procurement. This allowed the project team to commence work as soon as they arrived.

Value Add

Experience on previous aerodrome works assisted in successful permit consultation with the Central Lands Council.
