Project Profile

Project Replacement of Six Bridges, Walgett Location Walgett, NSW Client Walgett Shire Council Contract Value $3.2m Construction Period May 2010 to April 2011

Replacement of Six Bridges, Walgett

Description

This project involved the construction of six concrete bridges and new road approaches, earthworks, piling, and diversion routes for traffic.

Despite lengthy delays due to flooding, CivilTeam formed good relations with the client and local community, and by project completion were held in high regard.

Works

  • Demolition of existing timber bridges
  • Driven piles for abutments and centre piers
  • Precast abutments, headstocks and wingwalls
  • Varied spans (from single to four span)

Challenges

  • Recurring flooding delayed works
  • Multi-site construction and coordination
  • Staged works
  • Working at heights
  • Precast installation
  • Working in a river environment
  • Environmental Management

Our Management

Foreseeing challenges with the location and scope of this job, CivilTeam made the decision to invest in a crawler crane.

As flooding repeatedly submerged the works and caused months of delay, having this resource available for the entire period proved invaluable.

Value Adding

Issues found with pile founding depths and supplied segmental piles had to be carefully managed. This required close coordination between the piling works, site staff and the client.

The result was that the piling was successfully completed within budget and to program (adjusted for the extended wet period).
