Parkes Airport Runway
Description
This project involved reconstruction and strengthening of the sealed-surface 04/22 main runway at Parkes Regional Airport. Detailed planning and ongoing consultation with project stakeholders enabled the airport to remain fully operational throughout the execution of works.
A significant subsoil issue was picked up in the pre-planning stage and modifications were implemented that enabled the works to still meet design specifications on time and on budget.
Works
Key elements in this project included:
- Removal of current runway surface and portion of sub-base
- Proof roll existing surface and removal of unsuitable material
- New gravel pavement and application of bitumen spray seal
- Widen and apply single coat seal to existing taxiway to terminal
- Runway line marking
- Drainage Works
- Night Works
Challenges
- Working on a live airport
- Poor subgrade conditions
- A nearby residential area that could be affected by works, including noise
- Short program, necessitating night works
- Waste Management
Our Management
A strong partnership was developed between the project team and the client. When a serious subsoil issue was discovered at the initial site inspection, CivilTeam proposed a solution that required an increased workload and higher-than-specified concrete strength.
Both CivilTeam and the client were satisfied that this outcome would meet required specifications, and CivilTeam went on to complete the works within time and budget.
Value Add
The final pavement strength achieved was above design specifications. As a result, CivilTeam delivered a superior project outcome against value for money.
