Project Profile

Project Donaghy’s Bridge Replacement Location Mullumbimby, NSW Client Byron Shire Council Contract Value $1.2m Construction Period February 2010 to July 2010

Donaghy’s Bridge Replacement

Description

This project was a regional road and bridge upgrade initiative partially funded by the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA). CivilTeam completed the successful construction of the new bridge over Wilson’s Creek, Byron Shire, approximately 5km north west of Mullumbimby.

The bridge crossed an environmentally sensitive rainforest remnant which required stringent environmental planning and management to ensure impacts were minimal.

Works

Key elements in this project included:

  • Bored pile abutments and centre pier in creek
  • Concrete works for abutments, columns, headstocks
  • Precast deck units and wingwalls
  • Two 20m spans
  • Transverse stressing
  • Traffic Control

Challenges

Organising and planning equipment movements in a narrow road corridor, on a live road site, presented numerous challenges for the project team.

The road was required to remain open to the public at all times, being the only access for the surrounding community. At a critical stage of the program a flood event reduced site access, further restricting the type of equipment that could be used. The team were required to source additional equipment to overcome the conditions.

Our Management

CivilTeam engaged an ecologist in the planning phase to assist in the relocation of endangered flora species.

This proactive Environmental Management assisted in preserving the integrity of the riverbank area.

Value Adding

The project team successfully completed the project with zero environmental impact, ahead of schedule, and with a quality result.
