Cairns International Airport
Description
This project was a component of the $135 million redevelopment at the Cairns International Airport. The airport is located on low-lying reclaimed swamp land, with the site having potential for acid sulphate soils. This project included the construction of an 850m v-shaped open concrete drain and associated works.
Challenges on this job included the presence of foreign debris in the soil, and managing the potential acid sulphate soil (half of the 5,000m3 of soil removed).
Furthermore, trimming and compaction had to be very precise (1:1700 grade), with fall of only 500mm over the 850m of drain.
Works
Key elements in this project included:
- Site clearing, removal and disposal of existing concrete pipes and headwalls
- Protection or relocation of services
- Removal of potential acid sulphate soil
- Excavation and construction of a reinforced concrete drain
- Supply and placement of 100mm x 2.6 m wide concrete for 850m long V-drain
- Turf, and hydro-mulching disturbed areas
Challenges
- Trimming and compaction to 1:1700
- Managing acid sulphate soil
- Dealing with the presence of foreign object debris in the excavated soil
Our Management
CivilTeam incorporated its environmental protection procedures on the project - incorporating acid sulphate soil and water management plans to control the site’s major environmental challenges.
Value Adding
CivilTeam’s commitment to quality was crucial in managing the site challenges and was highly regarded by the client.
