Pilbara and Kimberley Aerodrome Upgrades

Description

Successful outcomes on Project 34 led to CivilTeam being awarded a further thirteen aerodrome upgrades in the Pilbara and Kimberly Region of W.A.

A second site team was mobilised to assist in completing the works under this contract.

Works

Key elements undertaken varied between sites, but included:

  • Upgrading and resealing of runways taxiways and aprons
  • Dragging and rolling taxiways and runways
  • Restoring and replacing markers
  • Track construction
  • Electrical works
  • Camel proof fencing

Challenges

  • Executing works on a live aerodrome
  • Remote locations with difficult access
  • Indigenous Relations
  • Early onset of the wet season

Management

CivilTeam’s partnership approach with the indigenous communities was very important in the success of this project. The site team was able to sensitively balance logistics, local community needs and project execution. Working in such remote locations required the site crew to operate as independently as possible, mobilising a range of smaller, less- conventional plant able to negotiate roads in adverse conditions.

These airfields are extremely remote and it is critical they remain open at all times, being the lifeline to the community for health services and supplies. CivilTeam maintained constant communication with essential services, planning works so that the project team were able to have the landing strip fully serviceable within 10 minutes.

Value Add

CivilTeam maintained communication with the client, forwarding photos and drawings that enabled real-time decisions. This minimised variations, alterations and remobilisations to site, which would have been very costly to the client.
