Cairns International Airport

Description

This project involved the construction of an extension to the turning node and RESA on International Runway 33. Cairns International Airport at this time was the fifth busiest airport in Australia and remained operational throughout the almost two years of reconstruction.

For this project, work had to be undertaken while the runway was in full use, with no delays to aircraft.

Works

Key elements in this project included:

  • Extension of runway turning node with high strength pavement
  • Extension of Runway Emergency Safety Area (RESA) with additional shoulder- strength pavement
  • Extension of RESA beyond the existing southerly limit with a pavement taper
  • Relocation of electrical services around the extended pavement area
  • Drainage

Challenges

  • Working airside, in a high-security area.
  • Acid sulphate soil management
