Cairns International Airport
Description
This project involved the construction of an extension to the turning node and RESA on International Runway 33. Cairns International Airport at this time was the fifth busiest airport in Australia and remained operational throughout the almost two years of reconstruction.
For this project, work had to be undertaken while the runway was in full use, with no delays to aircraft.
Works
Key elements in this project included:
- Extension of runway turning node with high strength pavement
- Extension of Runway Emergency Safety Area (RESA) with additional shoulder- strength pavement
- Extension of RESA beyond the existing southerly limit with a pavement taper
- Relocation of electrical services around the extended pavement area
- Drainage
Challenges
- Working airside, in a high-security area.
- Acid sulphate soil management

At the conclusion of the five separate contracts awarded to CivilTeam throughout the two year redevelopment of the Cairns International Airport, the client expressed his appreciation of the CivilTeam with a very positive “Client Satisfaction Report” rating CivilTeam Personnel and Resolution of Issues and Variations as “Superior”.
